ABOUT POTTREE HILL
My love for clay has placed me on a journey of self-development learning to be a potter. Being guided by other masters of clay over the past 20 years, it was time for me to have my own studio and fully immerse myself into the creation of pottery and ceramic art.
Once built, Pottree Hill Studio will be situated on our 17-acre bush block in beautiful Lakes Entrance, East Gippsland. The landscape is an ideal location to inspire myself and future students who wish to learn the craft of pottery. The studio will house my workspace, an art gallery and also a student classroom.
Full of ideas I plan to produce not only beautiful pieces but also functional wares and sculptural forms that will be available for purchase here.
Learning my craft from how others have developed their styles, I hope to create pieces that also have their own voice. By using wood-firing techniques this will aid in giving special qualities to the pottery, as it produces unique effects that I want to explore further.
Wanting to share my passion with others and help guide potential potters I will be introducing classes that include hand building, wheel throwing, glazing and eventually teaching the methods to fire using a gas kiln or woodfire kiln.
With our bush setting, it provides the ultimate serenity to help artists focus and find a great workspace to develop their skills. A small fee will be applicable to use the studio classroom.
Our ultimate goal is to set up tiny homes or cabins to give students accommodation for extended stays.
To my pottery buddies, I will enjoy calling upon you when it comes time to fire my own woodfire anagama style kiln. They say it takes a village to raise a child, running an Anagama needs a large group of like-minded potters to labour over the firing and then enjoy the rewards together. Bonds are formed over the long hours taking care of the kiln which can sometimes take a week to run.
Pottree Hill is all about wanting to create a special place where people can come together and create. The truth is, it’s not just about playing with clay, it’s the bonds we create through a community. The people you meet who are just as dedicated and obsessed with mud as I am. I am hooked for life, with a goal to still be potting when I’m 100.
We hope you follow our journey as we build our dream together.
